Bucephalandra sp. ‚Ulysses‘ – Rare epiphyte plant from Borneo

Bucephalandra sp. ‚Ulysses‘, like many of its fellow species, originates from Borneo in Asia and is a rare and sought-after epiphyte that is rarely available in the trade. This slow-growing aquatic plant is characterized by reddish leaves with wavy edges and grows to a height of around 5 to 10 cm.

In its in-vitro form, Bucephalandra sp. ‚Ulysses‘ has smaller, greenish leaves that gradually take on their submerged shape and characteristic color in suitable aquarium conditions.

Growing conditions and care

Although Bucephalandra sp. ‚Ulysses‘ is easy to care for, it can react sensitively during the transition phase, which can lead to leaf loss or the disintegration of individual parts of the plant. Patience is required here: as long as the rhizome remains healthy and intact, the plant will produce new shoots. To ensure that the plant thrives, it is best to place it in an established aquarium where the conditions are already stable.

Water values and light requirements

Bucephalandra sp. ‚Ulysses‘ tolerates a wide range of water values, but prefers slightly acidic to neutral water. This typical shade plant requires very little light, around 10 lumens per liter with LED lighting, and therefore also does well in dimly lit aquariums.

Fertilization and growth

Due to its slow growth, Bucephalandra sp. ‚Ulysses‘ only requires a small amount of nutrients. However, CO2 fertilization (at least 10 mg/l) and the moderate addition of liquid fertilizer promote healthy growth and prevent nutrient deficiency. Pruning is only necessary every 5 to 6 weeks due to the slow growth.

Versatile application possibilities

This epiphyte is preferably used in the middle ground of an aquarium, where it is attached to hardscape such as stones or wood. Its ability to grow firmly under water makes it particularly attractive for shrimp aquariums. When emersed, Bucephalandra sp. ‚Ulysses‘ is also ideal for wabi cusas, paludariums and aqua-terrariums.
